Hello and welcome to this great blog about me as an average guy who ended up with a crazy Chinese family. I’ve been together with my wife for some time now but no matter what she told me about her Chinese parents, I never really believed it or thought she just exaggerated. I guess everyone would have thought so who hasn’t experienced Asians in their own wild environment yet.
I was taught the better of it the first time I went to China and ever since then their craziness and oddities just pile up more and more. Of course most Chinese or Asians will disagree with me and say “Hey, whats weird about it? That’s all totally normal”…Yeah right, for any “Western” person this ain’t normal so please sit down, read and enjoy.
Before I forget it, don’t take everything too serious. Though everything is based on real happenings, I just might use a bit of too much sarcasm sometimes
And now to some more formal information about myself. I am Timo, living with my little family in Finland and endure the hardships of short summers and very very long winters. However after summer 2014 we are planning to move to Germany to start a new chapter in our lives! and I live with my family since 2014 in North Germany. Here we have longer summers than in Finland and the winter here is a piece of cake compared to the icy north.

Hilarious post on your family. I share the same problem/madness. People laugh when I mentioned the weird bathing habits of my in-laws( apparently soap is bad for you) or how cheese is smelly, all types of cheese, but stinking up the house with some weird food that need 8 hours to cook, while closing all the windows is ok.
I do have a couple of questions, how do you go about all those different Chinese habits regarding family? For example the habit of the pregnant woman not moving at all after child birth for 90 days?

Oh those Chinese habits (I often don’t understand the sense in them). I try mostly to cope with them as long as they are not total bs such as the 90days rest after giving birth.
I am thankful that my wife doesn’t want this rest time either as she wants to get back into shape (which is rather impossible when being in bed for such long time…) and we mostly convinced her mom as well. The resting time is really really stupid, I learned also its a big business in China, as there are special treatment centers where you may spend easily 100.000RMB per month so the woman just stays in bed and eats…there is a lot more to it and I am planning to write “soonish” some stuff about it 🙂

First of all, thank you for contacting me (it actually reminded me to put up an email for this blog) and also I feel kind of honored to be put into consideration for this.
However I am sorry but I think my blog audience and my articles are not very useful for those hotel chains as this entire blog is more about my experience with my new chinese family + some travel locations such as in Xi’an or in Finland. So I doubt that this blog would do any good for you and I believe that my readers prefer to read about topics which have more to do with relationships between “Westerners” and Asians

Ah ur Finnish!! I love Finns… could not guess from the few blog posts I read (this is the first time I’ve gone to ‘about’. For some reason, I have developed an affinity for Finland and Finnish people. And now the only Finnish guy I would call a friend is dating a Chinese girl! There are not enough Finns in Greenland =). Look forward to reading more of your adventures in Germany!
There are sadly not too many Finns in the world, but what you expect from a country with a population of only 5mil 🙂
Come to think of, there might be also so few Finns in Greenland as most Finnish people have already enough of isolation and cold winters from their homecountry!
I personaly prefer right now the climate in Northern Germany. There wont be much snow (usually!) and it wont get too cold as in Finland, the coldest there I experienced was around -41 degrees celsius

What I can see through a quick glance at your blog that you are Nepalese? (hope I am not wrong) One of my school mates from Finland is from Nepal and he is still living in Finland as he married a Finnish girl and I think they got a baby also now 🙂
Yes, I am from Nepal. And I studied in Kokkola 🙂 There were days when I hated living there because it’s so quiet and boring, now I often miss it (living in Poland).
Yeah I know some Nepali-Finnish couples too 🙂

Oh that is interesting. I know some peeps from Kokkola due to my former swimming career and also my bro (son of the host family in Finland I stayed with back during my high school time) studied there.
Hahaha this is awesome. My girlfriend of 5 years is Vietnamese and I can definitely relate to some of the “craziness” you refer to, but as I’m sure you know, it’s all relative to the culture one’s used to growing up. Looking forward to reading more!
It really is always a new discovery for me every day when something odd is happening in my Chinese family. Always when a partner is from a total different culture one will experience the weirdest things possible on earth, at least this is what i think 🙂

Glad I found your blog. My husband is American and I am mixed. He has really taken well to all the traditions. I think it helps me being mixed (I understand both sides) My mom can really have some interesting views to life, but not all bad. Some are just because she is Asian and that’s the way things are and have been for centuries! I am glad he loves the food and culture. I think if you don’t share the same “tastes”, it makes for a difficult relationship. We are going strong 25 years later! Great blog and looking forward to reading more! Cheers, Koko:)

25 years already? You guys must be doing something certainly right. Indeed both partners need to be open minded to make a interracial/ intercultural relationship work (okay, every relationship needs that but in this case it requires a tiny bit more). Thankfully in my case I was open minded enough to endure thus far all the crazy Chinese happenings and my wife was able to endure good old European habits more or less. Without any doubt there will be tons of challenges be still ahead so I will always have something to write about even when my dear mother in lAw doesn’t come up with some crazy stuff.
My wife and I have been together now for six years (knowing each other for seven) and being married for just four years now. This means we are still learning but thankfully out of the baby phase of a relationship

I try my best to retell the stories of the past years. In a way this whole blog is like a therapy as some of the stuff my mother-in-laws is doing is just insane and takes some time to get over.

Thank you so much. I think I stumbled upon nepaliaustralian’s blog somewhen last year before her daughter was born and ever since that I check on it whenever I can.
Can’t say that my blog is really about Asian lifestyle in general but on the particular Chinese family. Sure there are similarities in Asia when it comes to families but I do hope not too many have such a crazy mother in law as I do 🙂
