Trip to Kiel and its surroundings

My Chinese mother-in-law is leaving soon back to China and this means we have to visit even more places than before. Even though we got around here in North Germany in the past months we never went to any other city except Flensburg few weeks ago. This will have to change as there is just a week left for MIL so we started our Sightseeing Tour with Kiel and its surroundings.

The beach right next to the submarine

Kiel is the capital of Schleswig-Holstein, the state we live in. The city is only 15 minutes away by car from us so it makes it perfect for my wife to get some real shopping done once a while. The first destination I selected for us was the Laboe Naval Memorial several kilometres away from the city. It is dedicated to all the sailors who died during the world wars. In front of the monument is the old German submarine U-995 which can be entered for a small fee. As we only had little time we had to decide to visit either the monument (which has a fantastic view from the top-level) or the submarine. Because MIL and my wife never had visited a submarine they decided on it and we had a short submarine sightseeing. After that we checked out the local beach and then headed to the city.

Everytime we drive to a new city I feel lost, even with GPS. However Kiel was the worst experience so far for me. The streets there are so confusing that I took more than once (eight times) the wrong turn by going into a street too early. I don’t know what they were thinking when coming up with this street system but I have the feeling that those “planners” were under the influence of something… Anyways, I managed to get us safely to a multi storey park house right next to the main shopping mall of the city “Sophienhof”. As it was already past noon we decided it was better to eat first before doing anything else. So off we went first to the so-called old town of the city where I barely saw any old buildings except the church and a couple of other buldings but that is due to the Second World War as more than 80% of the city was destroyed due to heavy bombings by the Allies.  After some walking around we settled on a steak restaurant called “Block House” which belongs to the restaurant chain with the same name. They are pretty famous here for their steaks and many friends recommended it so it was time to actually try their food. Though it was very good I still prefer the steak restaurant in my hometown. Not only due to the lower price but it somehow fits my taste better.

What beautiful city!

After the mission of filling our stomachs was fulfilled the shopping madness started. I really do believe that MIL can survive a month without food or drink if she just can go around shopping. I always thought my wife is already much into all this shopping stuff but my crazy Chinese mother-in-law is unbeatable in this field. Did I mention the current heat wave already? Well, it is pretty warm here in Germany and during our trip in Kiel we had 33-34 degrees Celsius which is pretty decent for German standards. Of course it can’t compete with the temperatures in Asia but even MIL said it is hot but I guess this is only because there are barely any air conditions around here.  Last but not least we headed back to the shopping mall to have some Quark dessert at one of the food stalls and then it was time for one more round of visiting each any every shop in the mall for both of the women. We men (Nathan and I) just walked around, really walked around…Nathan actually pushed his baby stroller first one time around the first floor of the mall and then also on the second floor. After the last round was completed he just turned around, looked at me and raised his arms. This is his signal that he is tired and wants to be carried instead. Many people were actually wondering when we went around as I was walking next to the stroller so from the front it looked like the stroller is moving on its own.

Shopping is sooo boring

In the end both women were exhausted from this long day and my wife even fell asleep the second she entered the car. I must say it was a nice trip and I wish there would have been some time to go the beach to enjoy the sun better and cool down in the ocean. Sadly MIL does not want any more taint than she already got here in Germany and thus no such activities are possible as long as she is here. Now I just hope for the next heatweave once she is gone so we can relax at the beach at some point. Right now even with the worst heat she still tries to cover little Nathan with clothes as he might get sick if there is some breeze or an evil sunray might burn him to death.

Hopeless Plans

Our China holidays are getting closer and closer. Sure I am very happy and can’t wait for the trip however I am also worried. The thing is that my wife got again some plans on what we should do there and what places to visit. For any outsider this must sound great but you just don’t know my wife so let me explain.

One of my biggest victories: Getting my couch potato wife up the mountain

Over the years we had many plans to travel around when being in China. Those plans always stayed plans as there is something magical happening as soon as my wife enters her parents home. The person who had all those great ideas about visiting some nice places basically disintegrates in front of my eyes as the couch potatoeism spreads through her body. Yes, my wife is a notorious coach potato when being in China. There is no bigger joy for her than lying on the sofa, having her favorite snacks and drinks within arms reach and watching TV all day long. Within seconds all plans are forgotten or not important enough anymore. Who wants to see the beautiful nature in Jiuzhaigou 九寨沟 when you have the 100th rerun of 武林外传 My own Swordsman in the TV, some bubble tea and 大白兔White Rabbit candy?

I think you understand now the dilemma I am facing as my wife is starting to make all kinds of plans for our upcoming holiday. Each time she gets me excited about all those places we plan to visit and in the end we just stay for several weeks in Xi’an and the only times she leaves the apartment on her on free will is in order to go out eating. So what has she planned thus far? Now she no longer wants to visit places in China but is doing research on nice travel destination in Asia which we can reach rather quick (and cheap) from China. Few months ago she made some plans to go to the Jeju Island as her parents had invited us for such trip. Then suddenly she started checking on Thailand but then it was Jeju Island again. This morning she woke me up by pushing her mobile phone in my face. No, she didn’t try to kill me but to show some wonderful pictures of Bali.

Some river in some mountains

While still in bed she started searching for plane tickets, hotels and whatnot all. She even contacted one friend in China if she wants to come with us there together with her little family (they also got a one year old child). Right now I am myself looking up what Bali is offering for tourists and sad but true, I am excited about it. By now I should have learned from the past years but still I really get hyped every time she makes plans because somehow I still have hope that one of those plans will become reality. Though our big plans never worked out we still went sometimes at least to nice places around Xi’an such as Mount Hua or the Mountain Range near Qinghua Mountain. However these destinations are far from the original plans we had before each holiday in China. For now I also hope that MIL won’t suddenly decide it would be a great idea to join us in case the Bali plan ever becomes reality!

A Perfect Day in Flensburg

As we had finally sunshine here in Germany we decided to have a day at another city. My task was to decide which city to visit and I quickly came up with Flensburg. I had been very often there over the years as a very good friend lived there and so I knew at least a bit about what places to check out. Flensburg is roughly one hour away by car from my hometown and is located just a few kilometers away from the Danish border. Initially we planned to have a short stop in Denmark but decided against it as there was just not enough time.

Old Town

The day started pretty troublesome as we overslept and could not leave till 12 which meant that several hours of precious weekend time were lost. However once on our way everything went well, no traffic jams or the like and we arrived after less than an hour in Flensburg city center. I parked in the harbour area and from there we walked by the sea-side searching for a nice place to eat. Basically we did not even search as we just took the first restaurant with many people sitting outside and a good choice it was. The restaurant was the “Hansens Brauerei” and some of you who might understand little German can see from the name it is a brewery. In fact it is also Germans northernmost brewery as it is a bit more in the north than the bigger Flensburger Brewery. So this place did not only have superb food but also great beer, double yay for me. This food was especially great for as it meant one less lunch served by MIL…

After being stuffed to the brim we continued our trip through the city. The inner city (Altstadt) is very beautiful because there are so many old structures still standing unlike many other cities here. The reason for this is that Flensburg only suffered small damages during WWII through the bombings. For example my hometown has barely any old buildings left as most of the city was destroyed during the war. I must admit that my hometown looks like a grey ugly thing compared to this city but then again there is also a reason why my hometown has been voted before the ugliest city in this state but that is stuff for another time.

One of the many historical buildings

Both my wife and my crazy Chinese mother-in-law were fascinated by the Old Town in which also the long shopping street is located. Not only it is full of historical buildings but it is also the place in the city with the most people due to the shopping area and has many sightseeing spots such as several churches, museums and other points of interest. What else makes this city so interesting? Well it used to be a major trading port after the collapse of the Hanse in the 16th century and thus many special things started such as the local Rum production. Here you can find a so-called Rum and Sugar Mile in which all Rum/ Alcohol and sugar production sites are listed and can be visited by eager tourists. We did not follow it but saw several shops selling Rum and the Hansens Brauerei were we had our lunch is also part of this Rum and Sugar Mile.

Glücksburg Castle

As we had only limited time due to us oversleeping in the morning we could only have a short tour through the Old Town including a short stop for some nice ice cream and then headed out to visit Glücksburg, the northernmost city in Germany. The only reason for going there was to visit the Glücksburg Castle which was built from 1582 to 1587. It is certainly not the most impressive castle in the world but I wanted to see it already for many years and this trip to Flensburg was the perfect opportunity as it is just few kilometres away from the city. The castle is nearly entirely surrounded by a huge pond which was created as a defence system back in the day. Sadly we could not enter as it was too late when we arrived and thus we started our tour back home after taking few pictures there.

Have you ever visited a city and got the feeling that you want to move there? Have you ever visited any castle?
