Airport Adventures

My crazy Chinese mother-in-law is back. I mentioned in the last post already that some destructive force is living with us once again and I have to say that so much has happened already in the past two weeks. I do not know how she does it but she certainly has this profound ability to wreak havoc where ever she is. It is not only about the stuff she can destroy without even trying it is also about the way she thinks (mentioned multiple times on this blog already). In her opinion there is only one way to do something: Her Way.

I know best

Though the title of this article is Airport Adventures is actually started already before she even reach any airport. Just two weeks before flying to Germany my wife double checked with her that everything is in order. This means that all necessary snacks for us have been packed (serious business!) and that she has all documents with her. Documents such as the invitation letter that she needed to get the Visa and also is required to have on person when arriving in Germany as there is our telephone number listed so the border control can call us when needed. This is important as MIL has messed it up before in 2014 when she was nearly sent back to China again. When you have such a traumatic experience you will always remember what mistakes to avoid – not MIL. She did not only forget about the whole invitation letter but she had thrown it away months ago! All she had to say way “I didn’t know that this is important”.  Well she also threw away her flight tickets because she had taken pictures of them with the phone so that should be enough according to her…

I bet her Marriage Certificate has been thrown away years ago

As you see we had our fair share of trouble already before she entered the plane. Needless to say my wife had to organize all the papers in record time and get them somehow to China in that short time period. After that my wife actually thought that the worst was over before her arriving in Germany, oh how wrong she was or let’s say how naive. The journey started pretty well as she got from Xi’an to Helsinki without any troubles. In Helsinki she then had to wait for nearly three hours for her connecting flight to Hamburg.

Yo, Granny is Crazy

My wife told MIL to send her a message when the boarding would start. Nothing happened within 5 min so my wife asked her again about the boarding and to take a picture of the boarding screen – no reply. Then 15 min before the boarding would close MIL said that the flight is delayed as there is no boarding. So my wife asked MIL yet again to take a picture of the boarding screen to make sure that she is at the right Gate – again ignored by MIL. Wife all nervous started to check on her phone about the flight and voila the Gate had been changed to another one just 20 metres away. Quickly she sent her mother about it and to rush to the new Gate. You can guess what happened. MIL did not listen to her daughter and still insisted that the flight was just delayed. Then when she finally went to the right Gate the plane had just left.

You can’t even imagine how furious my wife was. MIL had ignored all messages, it could have been all avoided by just taking a picture of the screen right in the beginning. MIL’s excuse was only “But I was at the right Gate, how could I believe that you would know  what is going on and which Gate to take?”. Through some miracle my dear Chinese mother-in-law got another flight to Hamburg a few hours later but it was all so exhausting especially as I had to pick her up from the airport around 1am instead of 7 pm.  This whole situation was so frustrating and I do not even dare to mention it again in front of my wife.

What is your worst Airport experience?

Welcome little Nathalie

I am a bit late with this post but the past weeks have been crazy. On the 18th of May our baby girl was born. At 07:30 am she decided that it was time to stop harassing her mother and see for herself how the world is like. With 3640 grams ~8lbs and 52cm ~20.5 in she is not the smallest baby around and has actually the same size as her brother #Nathancuty when he was born.

Cuddle cuddle

The birth went without complications and the baby girl and her mother could spend time together right from the beginning. After two nights in the hospital they were allowed to leave and mommy recovered well thus far. When the girl was born it was a rather busy time at the hospital as five other women had given birth just the previous day. Due to this we did not get a family room for the first night but luckily got one for the second night so I could stay with both exhausted ones in the hospital. Funny enough my wife’s friend had her baby boy just seven hours prior in the same hospital! (my wife was overdue and her friend had her baby few days earlier than “calculated”).

Nathan spent those two night with his grandparents without too much trouble for them. Only at night he got upset without his parents around and wanted his grandparents to get us. So far he is very happy to have his baby sister around and kisses her all the time when he gets the chance. He is actually kind of overdoing it as he wants to spend each moment with his sister and is very excited when she is awake. He is very very good in waking her up! By now he also realized that he is not the only important person around anymore and he tries to have as much time as possible with his mother.

After our Nathan got his fair share of names with Nathan Yiran Antti (first name easy to pronounce in English/German, then the second one in Chinese and then the third name in Finnish) we decided to bless our baby girl with the a similar naming arrangement. So now we have Nathalie Yishi Amalia here as our bundly of joy. The Finnish names of our children even got a little meaning as Antti was the name of my mother’s uncle and Amalia was the name of my mother’s grandmother.

I would love to write more but a certain Demon of Destruction is blessing us currently with her presence for the next three months and I need to make sure that not too much is destroyed in the end.

The month of change

We are now in the first week of May and with it on the final straight of my wife’s pregnancy. The calculated due date is the 11th of May but it could happen now any time. In fact only 2% of all children are born within of the two days of the calculated due date! However my wife is hoping that our baby girl will stick to the “calculations”. First of all because Nathan was two weeks late and was not the smallest baby around when born with 3970 grams (~8,7 lb) and 52cm (~20,5 in). She really does hope that the girl won’t be taking that long. Though the most important reason for sticking to the plan is not the size/ weight increase of the baby but that my wife still has some stuff to do here.

Will our baby girl look similar to #Nathancuty?

You might already know that my wife and I have our own little business. This also means whenever we are on holidays or are sick we are not earning anything at all. Right now my wife is still working every single day so when the baby is there that she can rest for a few weeks. Here in Europe we got the Mother Protection before and after giving birth, work or anything related to it is prohibited but well as you can see with my wife she does not really care at all as it would mean zero income for us. Anyhow she agreed at least to reduce the work load and there should be nearly zero work starting tomorrow for her. For the next weeks it shall be my time to shine in our little business as I will run nearly everything alone. Okay that is also only possible as my wife will reduce our advertised products by nearly 80%. Even though it will be reduced it will still mean lot of work for me so there might be a few blog posts missing for this month and perhaps even the beginning of next month.

Maybe some fishing in Finland together with #Nathancuty this summer?

What are our plans for this summer? Enjoy the time with our baby girl of course! Perhaps we might even travel to Finland again but we have to see how everything works out here. The trip to Finland might be especially tricky as we would go by car this time (driving through Danmark and Sweden and taking from there a ferry to Finland) with over 1000km to drive within less than 15 hours with a newborn in the car. In the end of May my dear Chinese mother-in-law will come to haunt us for three months again so I certainly will have some interesting stuff to tell. Sadly my father-in-law is not coming to Germany as he has to take care of the dogs, somehow I have the feeling he will never be able to travel here as MIL is not allowing it…

What are your plans for this summer?
