The Naming-Stage has begun

Ever since the article “Family 4.0 in progress “ we had multiple appointments with the doctor and ultrasound check-ups in order to determine that everything is fine and most importantly to see the gender. However each time the doctor could only say “the baby doesn’t want us to see it yet”. That would be fine but we heard this sentence six times! Yes six times the baby prefered to hide from the prying eyes of the doctor. Meanwhile a friend who is pregnant as well got to know the gender during the second check-up already. My wife was stressed, very stressed as she wished for a girl and also because she was annoyed of her mother telling every few days what gender the child might be.

After hearing “the baby doesn’t want us to see it yet” once again in the middle of the week we decided to have yet another check-up in a nearby city. We were at the doctor before at week 11 for some risk evaluation and they got a 3D-Ultrasound there through which you can see all kind of details. Back then the doctor knew already the gender but was not allowed to tell yet. This is because due to regulations stating that before the end of week 12 of the pregnancy the gender can not be told (here a little article regarding the reason for it) . So the only person knowing the gender was not allowed to tell us back then. This time however it was week 23 and we were ready. The primary goal for this check-up however was to make certain that everything is fine with the baby. The doctor was going on and on about the different development stages and that everything looks fine with a sudden”and its a girl”. I did not even realize him saying it as I was busy building some toy cars with Nathan and my wife also needed a few seconds to realize what just happened.

Meimei I am waiting for you here with Totoro-san

So yes, we are expecting a baby girl and Nathan will get a Meimei 妹妹 and not a Didi 弟弟. As you might expect my wife is full of joy right now and checked out all kinds of girls clothing already. My wife told pretty much everyone she knows about it just seconds after leaving the doctor’s office. Of course she also told her mother about the gender and her reaction was “see I told you all the time it is a girl, I am always right!”. You might remember her calendar thing and what gender the child will be according to all kind of stupid nonsense, over the past months the gender she foretold changed every few days… Right now we are in process of thinking of some names which is really no easy task. Thankfully we still got till May to decide on it and I have no doubt at all that MIL will have some really stupid name suggestions once again.

What crazy names might MIL come up with?

Be sure to follow me also on Facebook and on Twitter as I will post there occasionally pictures which do not find their way into my blog posts. Furthermore I also have a YouTube Channel in which some videos might pop up from time to time

  1. Congratulations! As they say in China – boy and girl make a happy family 😀 glad your wife also got what she wished for! Look forward to hearing the name. You should crowdsourcing it hahahah. Have everyone give name suggestions – it’s the crazy baby naming showdown 😉

    1. Thank you :), yeah the Chinese happy family/ perfect family with a boy and a girl is rather interesting. That is also one of the reasons why my wife was so stressed 😛
In case we dont find anything “good” for the name I might even do something like that to gather some ideas. From my post “Family 4.0 in progress” I asked already and got some nice ideas.
Anyhow read some of the articles on your page as several of my fellow bloggers contributed posts recently. Looking forward to some more 🙂

    1. Indeed things are getting exciting. Now we need to think about a new bed for Nathan so little sis can get his old one. Besides that we also need to consider how we do our business as soon my wife shouldn’t handle with so much stress anymore, so much to have in mind!

  2. Congratulations. Just wishing a healthy baby for you..regardless of gender. This needs to be uppermost in all parents.

I’m bewildered ..what type of stupid names would MIL think of?

Will baby daughter have a Chinese name anywhere.. or will it be a translation with English official (or whatever) on birth certificate?

    1. Oh MIL has all kind of weird ideas. One suggestion she gave for Nathan was xiaopang, little fatty….
The girl will most likely have her first name as a English/ German one and then two middle names one in Chinese and one in Finnish

      1. Interesting for 2 different name languages. I don’t know why one earth your MIL would even think that way. It seems “old-fashioned” thinking. As you know, some Chinese families are very direct. But what do I know, since I don’t know the spoken language very deep/extensively and have zero capacity to read except less then 15 characters. You might know than me on the latter!

      2. Haha though I am still terrible in Mandarin I know/ should know around 600 character by now with my self studies 🙂
I think I know no Chinese who were born abroad who can read or write characters! My best friend from my youth is Chinese (he was at my wedding as well) and he can not read anything though his mother tried her best for 18 years. I guess it is the lack of everyday practice and also lack of interest in his case/ all his cousins who I know.

      3. Yes interest, motivation and frequent use is important for a difficult language like Chinese. By the way, my father taught himself English as an adult ..took several years in Canada while working in restaurant and had a big family.. There wasn’t ESL classes in small town at the time.

      4. My mother learned German through music and TV when she came here back I the 1960’s. They didn’t had language classes either back then though Germany hired so many foreign workers during the economic rise

      5. Wow, that’s great! My mother doesn’t know much English. She does have a bright mind, but for her 6 children was energy and time.

  3. Congrats! Everyone told us we’d be having a girl up unto week 38 when the doctor found testicles. Baby just didn’t want to show. Everyone’s getting on our nerves now saying we should try for another baby – a girl (not my in-laws, but every second stranger on the street). Anyways, your baby will be perfect no matter the gender!

    1. I for myself wouldn’t mind a second son either but you know well enough about those perfect family ideas in China. I really wonder why they need to put so much focus and pressure on such matter. About seeing the testicles in the ultrasound: my friend has a son the same age as Nathan and on the first ultrasound picture is an arrow labeled “testicles “. Such a wonderful first memory of the son:D

  4. Congratulations! Do you think MIL will give suggestions for English names, or only for Chinese ones? Because if she chooses an English name maybe it would be something like Sunny or Cherry or those strange names xD

I’d just say, don’t go with Natalie! It’s too close to Nathan, haha.

    1. She would give suggestions Mainly for Chinese names but in case it is English I wouldn’t be surprised to hear something like pizza or nono. I somehow convinced my wife not to chose Natalie for now 🙂

    1. Thank you, now we just need to find some time and focus to actually find some names as due to the lunar new year all business is hell for us right now (they are all in holidays already and our boxed are stuck at customs got many weeks…)

  5. Back in my day you could only find out the baby’s gender if you had to have an amniocentesis test which was dangerous for the baby and so only done if medically necessary. We just found out at the moment of birth. No big deal really, there are only two options! As for names, my MIL and my mum both gave umpteen ‘helpful’ suggestions but we shrugged them off saying that we had chosen ‘Quasimodo’ for a boy and Euphemia for a girl! That shut them up! The kids ended up being Alex and Emily!!!!

    1. The amniocentesis test is really dangerous. My mother had to take it in 86 as she was already over 40. Thankfully they did the test with the help of ultrasound in order to not “harm” me…in Germany were many cases in the begnning of the 1980´s when the doctors blindly did the test any many babies were harmed or killed.
Let’s see with which names we might come up 🙂

  6. Congratulations! What a lovely news 🙂 How nice that you’ll now have both a boy and a girl. 🙂 Nathan is growing cuter every day! I can already imagine how cute his sister is also going to be. I am actually very fascinated with mixed babies and find them very unique. I have no idea about the name. Btw, does Nathan have a Chinese name too?

    1. Yeah I should get a gun license but then again it is too strict here in Germany. Perhaps moving to the USA would make it easier and I think a automatic rifle looks so much cooler than some little handgun :p

  7. I am very behind on my blog reading. Congratulations! That is great news. Nathan is looking really grown up now- he looks ready for a Mei Mei to play with. We had a baby girl in November. She is already 11 weeks. Time is going fast!
