New Apartment IV

It has been a while since I wrote last time about the new apartment in China. It has been too long as over half-year passed by already. Back then I had the news that MIL will move into the new apartment alone and FIL would stay behind the old place and have his peace from his wife. This actually did not change thus far and that is something special as my in-laws are changing their plans as often as other people change their clothes.

Renovating the apartment has finally started and MIL might be able to move in by May/ June.  It took ages for them to decide how the apartment should look like, which materials to use and what furniture to purchase but after nearly a year of discussion and useless ideas they settled on something. Now I have no clue at all how it will look like but something has been bothering me a lot. Apparently renovating that 90m²/ ~970ft² apartment (actually more like 80m² as in China there is some stupidity going on that you purchase part of the staircase/ floor outside the apartment) takes over three whole months! How on earth can this be possible? Sure the apartment is just a shell when they purchased it without any floor, just concrete wall and windows. But how can this take that long?

I know my way around renovating apartments as we turned this…

Here in Germany when you build a house most companies guarantee that the entire house is complete after 3 months including everything inside according to your wishes. So how can just a small apartment take that long in China. Besides taking way too long it also costs pretty much the same as it would in Germany. For example in 2017 I renovated a 70m² apartment together with my dad in just four weeks so how can it be that professionals need three times as long? In my opinion something fishy is going on as it seems to be the norm in China that it takes so many months and worst they say the apartment needs to “air” for a couple of months so all the fumes are more or less gone by then.Ā  I am no expert but I have renovated enough apartments by now that I know that there is something very wrong and that they just want to charge more for taking that long.

into something bit better looking

I would love to show some pictures of the current progress but sadly my in-laws never took any pictures or videos. Most likely the next pictures of that apartment will be in April when we visit it ourselves. I do wonder how long it will take for MIL to ruin the apartment as three months each year in our apartment are enough to destroy or damage rather much. Probably FIL will go there very often to clean up the mess due to his OCD but I hope it won’t be that often as I wish for him to get some rest and perhaps his hairs might even grow back with less stress around the household.

What are your experiences on how long it takes to renovate an apartment?

New Apartment Part III

Yes, my first blog post in ages will be about the new apartment my parents in-law have bought. As a reminder here are Part I and Part II of the new apartment blog posts. I know that there should have been some updates here in the past weeks but I was just too lazy and the weather here is just insane. Right now we even wish that it would start to rain again, yes here in North Germany where it normally rains 9 out of 10 days!

We wish for some rain clouds here!

So what is so special about the news from the new apartment in China? Remember that my in-laws had decided to move in towards the end of the year so we still could enjoy the old apartment during our holiday in April/ May. Plans changed again (who would have expected that with my in-laws!) but they changed to a rather good plan. In fact the plan is so great that my father in-law has been seen smiling in the past months, something unknown before. No they don’t sell the new apartment and no they did not win the lottery, it is something much much better for FIL.

According to the new plan MIL will move alone to the new apartment and FIL will stay in the old apartment! That is like the perfect solution for them. So FIL can finally live his way in a calm and peaceful environment while everything is clean while MIL will drown in madness and dirt after a short while. Sure it is sad that the new apartment will be ruined by my dear Chinese mother-in-law but at least her husband seems happy again. I have the feeling it is theĀ  best thing happening to him in decades.

Crazy women dancing

As you might remember the new apartment is not the closest to the old one. By bus you need around 30 min in good conditions and up to 1 hour with traffic jams. MIL insists she will still go to her dancing lessons and evening dancing group meetings. But no, she won’t use a bus, she came up with the plan to use a rental bike! I have seen her ride a bike and I say that plan is utterly stupid. A tortoise with only one leg is faster than her bicycling. The past years we went sometimes by bike to a nearby supermarket. While I need alone roughly 7-8 minutes, I need together with my wife and pulling a bike trailer for our Nathan about 15 min. Now guess how long the same trip took when MIL was riding a bike as well…40 min! I have zero hope in her going anywhere by bike and besides she would get lost anyway and never arrive at her destination, leaving her rental bike somewhere in the middle of nowhere and call a taxi to take her home.

What do you think about my in-law’s new plan?

This and that

Once again more than two weeks have passed since my last blog post. No I did not lose motivation when it comes to blogging nor do I have a writer’s block. It is just that way too much is happening in our everyday life that I find only very limited time to invest into my blog/ following other blogs on a regular basis. In my last blog post I talked about our Life with two kids and how hard it can be to balance raising them and running a company besides trying to find some spare time in the end of the day.

Half the papers for 2017

Back then I did not imagine that things could get much harder for us but I was so wrong. Just two days after that article was published I got a call from the local tax office that they want to check out our company tax paper. Even though we always did all of the tax work properly we had to double-check everything. I think I might have nightmares about those two weeks of double checking for the rest of my life. We finished with everything at 4.30 am last thursday and the person from the tax office came at 9am! For the last few days I have been trying to just recover from this madness as there was nothing else each day than working, taking care of the kids and going through the tax papers till very late night. Now that this is mostly taken care of (still one small visit next week but nothing we can prepare anymore) I can finally start doing other things in life again such as going to do some sports in the morning before work, reading and thinking about my blog again.

The old area where my in-laws live

So what has happened to us in the past months besides tax office madness, too much work and being all the time ill due to Nathan bringing all possible diseases from kindergarten? Not too much as that is already enough but we also won’t be able to go to Poland this year even though we still had plans for that this summer. Reason for this is a surgery my father had recently and he needs to recover from it so the trip will hopefully happen next spring or latest next autumn. Apparently we are also buying an apartment in Xi’an but that is not 100% certain as of now. No we won’t be buying it for living there ourselves but it will be for my in-laws. There is this new apartment block and it is on the property of the old factory the whole family used to work. Because of this (I actually don’t understand why) they get some discount on the price so the apartments are roughly 25% cheaper for them. In fact the whole crazy family is getting apartments there so they can live together.

The new tower…

I am myself not convinced about that area as it is first of all more in the outskirts of Xi’an and then there is also nothing really close by. No supermarkets or anything so my in-laws would need to take bus everywhere compared to their current prime location right in the historical old town of Xi’an where everything is just a short walking distance away. Another problem is that they renovated their current apartment few years ago entirely so in case they want to rent it out it will be trashed within short time. Personally I just hope they decide to stay in their old apartment. Not only because I have zero interest in living in that new area when visiting them and needing to go everywhere by bus but also because it would be probably better for them to stay there. I mean they are also not the youngest people around any longer and then moving from a place they have lived for over 25 years to another area where nothing is close by and they don’t know any of the neighbours?

What is your opinion about my in-laws moving to a new apartment?
