Every year in the beginning of June there is here in Neumünster the city festival called Holstenköste. It is a four-day event with several music stages around the city center, food/ drink stalls and funfair rides. I haven’t been at this festival since 2005 as that was the year I moved away from here. Even though my hometown is pretty boring they still do good with this festival. This year the festival had at least during the first two days wonderful sunshine so it was pretty packed there. After those initial two days there was just a rain and we didn’t even bother going there on those days.
The whole event was first held in 1974 and evolved to the current size over the years. This city festival is pretty much THE EVENT OF THE YEAR for many people living here. But of course other cities also got their own festivals such as the Kieler Woche which is around two weeks after my hometowns festival and much much bigger. Talking about size, this city festival here attracts roughly 200.000 people during those four days, not bad for such a boring town I would say.
Besides all the delicious food everywhere on the festival area there are also those funfair rides. It was Nathan’s first time being in one and he looked rather confused. We also went to the ferris wheel which is one of the main marks of the festival for a few decades already. You know, I am terribly afraid of heights and that the cabins of the ferris wheel were open didn’t help either. However I managed rather well and wasn’t afraid at all this time, am I evolving? We were there with several friends of my wife and we all went to the ferris wheel except of MIL who seemed very afraid of it. Nathan was just Nathan and sat the entire time in my lap looking bored, I guess as a baby you just don’t care if you are suddenly around 50m in the air…
It is too bad about the terrible weather during the last two days of the festival but there is always another year, and another and another. As mentioned before there is another festival in the next city soon as we will most likely try to go there as it is even bigger. I am really wondering what my Chinese mother-in-law thinks about these events and about the food. In her opinion she can make any food we ate so far much better than the restaurants but somehow she hasn’t even started yet to make and of those dishes. Even stranger, she never says she can make better food than the restaurants in China, or perhaps she tried and failed and thus doesn’t want to mention it anymore. MIL is full of mysteries it seems.

Ha ha..you never know. Maybe MIL has got some hidden talents? Looks like a cozy festival and I can only imagine all the good food available at the food stalls.

You are one brave man to go on a Ferris wheel like that! I think I would have been so scared!! But, like you said, maybe you are evolving. 🙂

When the Ferris wheel started it felt like the world is ending but then I concentrated on the scenery I could view from up there rather than looking down 🙂
Looks like a very popular festival with lots to do there. I didn’t know MIL was afraid of the ferris wheel ride? Could be afraid of heights but she doesn’t sounds like one to be afraid of heights, always the go-getter to doing anything…
In the photo, it looks like Nathan doesn’t want to be around MIL. Sort of similar to the photo in the last post where Nathan is trying to run away from her penguin walk…

This city festival is very popular here but still pales in comparison to the one we want to go in two weeks as there are guests from around the world coming (old trading port and the capital of this state)
I grew up in Calgary, Alberta in Canada, and every year, they have a huge rodeo, called the Calgary Stampede. It’s a giant event where the whole city basically shuts down, turns the city into a western movie set, and drinks and parties. I’ve never personally gone to the Rodeo part, but there’s an area with rides, games and food that I went to every year when I was younger. Lol, of course now, I would avoid it at all costs. Can’t say that I’m really a “cowboy” person. 😉
This event sounds really interesting. Here they just do some celebrations without anything too special as in your hometown Turning practically into a western set 😀
MIL is most likely just taking in all in. I imagine it’s a completely different world from what she’s known. Culturally fascinating, too.
Actually the only things she sees are the shops around and what great shoes she could buy. And oh, how clean the air is but that’s all 😀

Normally we don’t but as we try that MIL can see some stuff around here and also that my wife learns about these events I check what all the places around here are offering 🙂

We also have an annual event like this! It is done in every city, town and village in Spain (on different dates, of course). I think the most famous is the one in Sevilla, you can google feria de sevilla 😛 They even wear traditional dresses and ride horses, but there is also the fun fair and stuff. In my hometown it is done at the end of May.
PS. There is no way I would ride a ferris wheel without glass all around. I am not afraid of heights but it just doesn’t feel safe.
Here in Germany every town got also their own little festivals but not with these kind of funfair rides etc but I guess it always depends on the size of the town 🙂
Yeah, in retrospect I feel again very unsafe for going to that ferris wheel trip
