Amazing Year 2014 Review

2014 was a really amazing year for me and my family. So many great things happened and we just had really much luck with everything. I am not even sure that I remember to write down each and every single good thing of this year in this post as there are just too many things which pop into my head.

But lets start with the beginning.

In January the time of Nathan birth was approaching and with it also my mother-in-law three-month stay in our apartment. But, back then the year started not so well as several bad things actually happened. First of all I got final answers from several Universities that they did not choose me for their programs, furthermore freelancing was going very bad and I could not find any stable job at all. To make things even worse we did not find any apartments for our future in Germany and much of our savings were consumed by our car.

However wonderful February happened. It started with MIL arriving in Finland and giving us already a lot of excitement. Excitement in both ridiculous but also few annoying ways. But what do you expect when three people are living together in a 40m² apartment and one of them is just going crazy as her baby is already due for over 10 days…

Yes, Nathan was seemingly feeling too comfortable in his mother’s womb and extended his rental contract by 14 days! On February the 21st it was then his big day and he joined this world and our family. Both mother and baby were healthy and were able to leave the hospital after two days and come home.

March came and with it our new apartment in Germany. After so many months searching for an apartment and losing another bidding process this apartment basically fell into our hands. My parents had helped an old man for many many years in our building and he passed away in March. What we did not know was that my parents and I would inherit everything he owned!

April was the month we went to Germany and started our first step in the long-lasting renovation process of our apartment. It was also the month when Nathan got baptized, to be precise he got baptized on Easter Sunday. Usually it is impossible to get a baptizing day on Easter as it is a very popular date however we were offered a date and we accepted without knowing that it would be on Easter Sunday…

May came and MIL left. Probably I shouldnt be so happy but I was very glad when she finally left Finland after spending three months with us. Of course she was a great help but enough is enough after such a long time. In May also my parents came to Finland to spend their summer in the cottage.

June was our “holiday” in the cottage where Nathan gathered his first fishing experiences and played first time in ice-cold Finnish lake water. Tallinn was another good thing which happened as we went together with other friends for a short two-day trip there to relax and eat well (at least I did eat very well).

In July nothing really good happened except that Germany won the Football World Championships! Oh, and there was yet another journey through Finland and to our cottage.

August we had our great holidays on Rhodes which we won through an online prize competition! After that we said our goodbyes to our friends in Finland, packed our last belongings and went again to our cottage to relax a bit before starting our journey to Germany.

Then the day of moving to Germany came in September. With two cars we drove from our cottage to Helsinki to take a ship to Germany. After two days on that ship, in a tiny cabin with four people, one baby and two bunnies we arrived and started shortly thereafter the last huge step in the renovating process. Much work was ahead of us but I did it with pleasure as I knew it would be worth it. However September was also full of exhausting runs through the city to get us all signed up, get social numbers and get my wife the German residence permit.

In October we celebrated my fathers 73rd birthday and an end of the renovation work was in sight. We got my wife signed up for the German language course and Nathan was doing of course very well.

November, lovely November. We finally moved into our new apartment and to sweeten up the month I finally got a job, a job I have hoped for so long time as we got with it our health insurance.

Now we are here in December. Christmas is ahead, presents still have to be bought so what good thing could still happen? Well, I am working now on finally “refreshing” the blog, something I had planned already for nearly a year. How will it look like? Lets see, it will be probably a surprise for me too! Just wait and see what new things I have in mind for my Crazy Chinese Family. Furthermore I want to thank you all who are reading this blog and thus give me motivation to go on to write down the weird stories of my family.

Moomin, Moomin and even more Moomin

What is Moomin you may wonder now but I will come to that in a second. First of all I want to explain how I come to this topic. Few weeks ago my father had a great idea: Lets buy all Moomin Episodes for Nathan!

Moomin1For all who do not know about Moomin, it is originally a comic strip and a book series about several characters which resemble white hippos. The author was Tove Jansson, a Swedish-speaking Finn, who created these stories some when in the 1940’s.

By now Moomin is pretty famous in various countries, especially in Finland and Japan! I do not know in how many languages these books and TV series (and movies) have been translated but I believe that the number is not too low as I have seen it on TV in many countries.

At first we wanted to buy for Nathan the German translated version of Moomin however we quickly found out that they only translated 50 odd episodes out of the over 100. In the end we purchased from Finland the complete Moomin DVD collection with all episode plus the moomin3Movie. In case you are more familiar with Moomin you probably know that there are several different TV adaptation which have been created over the decades. In this case I am talking about the series from 1990-91, its continuation series and movie. This includes Tanoshii Mūmin Ikka 楽しいムーミン一家 (or just Moomin), Tanoshii Mūmin Ikka: Bōken Nikki 楽しいムーミン一家 冒険日記 (or Delightful Moomin Family: Adventure Diary) and the movie Mūmindani no Suisei ムーミン谷の彗星 (Comet in Moominland). As you can see from the names the TV adaptation is from Japan and it is a Dutch, Finnish and Japanese collaboration. There have been previous animated TV series from Japan in int he 1969 version Mūmin ムーミン (Moomin) no other than Hayao Miyazaki was involved in it as well however he also opposed Tove Janssons viewpoint about the original Moomin which caused that she was not too pleased (actually angry) with this version (actually she was never happy with any adaptation).

2484 Minutes!!

Anyways, I am very happy that we bought this DVD collection as I grew up with Moomin. I still have many episodes recorded on VHS as well as few comic books. I also believe that this show will keep Nathan for a long time occupied as there are over 2440 minutes of material to watch (and if he is not watching I will gladly take over!). In my youth I always wanted to visit the Moomin World in Finland but I never had the chance, perhaps Nathan will be more lucky. Besides just the Moomin World, Comics, Books, Museums and TV adaptations there are tons of other things related to Moomin as well.

There are Moomin shops in Finland where you can buy everything you can imagine about those white hippos and the Helsinki-Vantaa Airport was for a time decorated with theirmoomin4 images and Finnair even painted Moomin figures on their Japan-line planes. At home we still got numerous Moomin mugs which you can buy in nearly every store in Finland and those are particularly popular with Japanese tourists. More often than not you see Japanese tourists in Helsinki with Moomin shopping bags filled with little fan articles to bring home for themselves or their family and friends. Yes, I will try to bring Moomin also into Nathan’s world and who knows how many mugs with white hippos he will own later on.

Nathan’s World

It is now already over seven months ago that our baby boy was born. These seven months have been pretty eventful for him and for us. He also managed to travel a bit around as he has been already to several countries. In his age I barely managed to travel with my parents to Finland  as I was apparently not the easiest backseat driver available.

WP_20140725_003His young traveling career started in April with a journey to Germany where he met for the first time his German grandparents and Uncle. There he also tamed wild Elephants and Tigers at Hagenbeck Zoo and got baptized in Hamburg. During the trip to Hagenbeck Zoo he really tried his best to blend in with the animals but in the end the Penguins discovered the fake one in their midst and kicked him out. Few months later Nathan went on a dangerous tour to Estonia to discover hidden secrets in the Old Town of Tallinn and realized it is so much cooler there than at home.

Back in Finland the wild swamps and forests of Western Finland were awaiting him asTwitter7ec2da3_jpg[1] well as fishing for monstrous pikes in a huge lake. It took a while to build up enough patience but in the end he succeeded by hauling in a pike longer than himself! Sadly the fishing rod could not withstand these forces and this was it for his fishing career in 2014.

In late summer the Island of Rhodes was welcoming him with adventurous days at the beach, diving trips on his father’s back for hidden treasures in the baby pool and relaxation at the fish spa. Just a bit over a month ago he turned his back to Finland and began a new life in Germany but not before saying farewell to his Finnish great grandparents . Not bad for a little baby but that is not all. Right now he is getting used to his new career as an architect by designing and supervising his own baby room in the new apartment.

WP_20140318_002But such a little monster is not easily satisfied with only a few career choices so he also decided to pick up modelling. This was at first rather hard as he looked like a mini version of Winston Churchill. To make it even worse for him this Churchill face will haunt him still for a while as it is used in both his Finnish and German passport for the next five years, poor baby. However Nathan is able to use this for his own career boost as his pictures as Mini Winston Churchill are great for “Before and After” slideshows.

Nowadays he resembles more a tiny human being and is rather popular with the ladies! Each day his crazy MTXX_20140726_190314Chinese grandma wants a video chat as well as his aunty from Japan. The interesting thing is that especially the Japanese aunty had only every few months contact with us  but now our little boy is dragged in front of the phone nearly every single day to look cute and stuff. By now he also has his own fan club on Chinese forums and on Weibo, good job Nathan, I never thought you would pick up Social Media Marketing this quick….well, the youth these days seem to get used to all this tech stuff much faster than us. Thankfullly he is still far away from his Chinese stalkers but as soon as he decides to advance his travels to China he might has to hire his own bodyguard (probably me).
